Other than the new form factors and the brilliant Retina HD display, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus seems to have a lot of under-the-hood improvements also. Your new device supports the next-generation H.265 technology, or “High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)” for encoding and decoding FaceTime calls over a cellular network. The improvement will deliver the same quality video calling but at just half the bit rate. I bet all you communication engineers are going haywire! 😉
This new addition seems to come from the new A8 processor, which boasts a 50 percent graphics performance increase over last year’s A7. Added to that, there’s a 25 percent boost in CPU performance also. But this special encoder/decoder module is absent in older generation iPhones. However, the new phones are still backward compatible with the H.264 standard for video calling, which is still seen in legacy devices like the Apple TV and the third-generation iPad.
According to Matthew Fleming, an expert in the field of signals processing, who initially spotted the new iPhone 6 feature says,
This has the potential to give Apple a serious advantage in the mobile video calling domain where bandwidth is at a premium.
Fleming also points out that while Macs have the processing power to run a software-based H.265 encoder/decoder modules, mobiles require hardware integration. Looks like we’ll be getting much more than just raw power with the new A8 chips.
