Say Goodbye to Dalvik. ART will be Android’s new compiler.

Dalvik had its day. This year, looks like the big companies are making some changes that developers have been wanting to see for years. Now, It is confirmed that Android is moving away from Dalvik as the default compiler. It will be ART which will be used as the default compiler in the versions to come.

With just a few days to go for Google I/O, Android is moving away from Dalvik. There were two merged commits which confirmed this news about the removing Dalvik from AOSP.

Here’s the change log for the merge:

Dalvik is dead, long live Dalvik! DO NOT MERGE croot cd libcore repo start dalvik-is-dead-long-live-dalvik . repo sync -c . git rm -r libdvm git add JavaLibrary.mk (after removing libdvm references, adding explict core-libart references) git add Docs.mk (after replacing references to libdvm with libart) git add benchmarks/Android.mk (after adding explict core-libart references) git add Android.mk (after removing dalvik-host target) git commit -a -m ‘Dalvik is dead, long live Dalvik! DO NOT MERGE’

Now, we might see a lot of new APIs and announcements for the developers at Google I/O this year. We will be there to cover the event for you, just like the way we covered WWDC, and here’s where you should be heading to.
