Mac OS X 10.10 – Yosemite is now out at WWDC 2014

Apple has officially announced the next major version of Mac OS X, Yosmite, today at WWDC 2014. Apple’s VP Craig Federighi took the stage, right after Tim Cook, to announce the new Operating System with over 100 user features.

The new OS comes with a lot of UI improvements, and almost all the icons have been changed. This is a very subtle and careful change that Apple is making to its desktop operating system.  Here are some of the pointers that defines the new OS X Yosemite.

General Features Overview

  • Focussed on clarity and Utility
  • Refined toolbars
  • New Window Title bars – Just like iOS 7
  • New Finder Sidebars
  • New icons for almost all the apps
  • Precise and consistent typography
  • New “Dark Mode” – Changes the OS’ brightness
  • Every bit of the OS is now updated
  • New Notification Center – Translucent, New Today View, Calendar, Reminders, Weather
  • Widgets are right inside Notification Center
  • Spotlight Updates – New Alfred like Spotlight, which is displayed at the centre of the display
  • Spotlight now fetches information from Wikipedia, Maps and everything internet

iCloud Drive:

  • iCloud Drive Lets you work on the documents right inside the Finder
  • Contents from iOS documents are synced right inside your Mac
  • All the file-types are now allowed to be synced inside the new folder
  • The new iCloud Drive is now available for iOS and Windows

Mail on Yosemite

  • New service called Mail Drop – A new attachment service via iCloud
  • New way to insert your signature inside an email
  • You can now annotate and Mail will auto correct your image to make it pretty.

Safari

  • New Omnibar in Safari
  • You can now subscribe to the RSS feed
  • Recent contacts are now available as quick link while sharing
  • New Tabs – With stacked view
  • You can now create a new Private Window – An will remain unaffected
  • New supports WebGL – Lets you stream Netflix video without Silverlight plugin
  • Improved and faster JS processing

Continuity

  • Airdrop now works between iOS and Mac
  • Handoff – Your devices in proximity are aware of each other.
  • You can now resume the work easily between devices

Messaging

  • SMS Messaging are coming to iMessage for Mac

Phone Calls

  • Your Mac can now sync with your Mac with the iPhone’s call logs
  • You can now dial the phone easily from your Mac
  • You can pick up your phone calls right from your Mac.

Available to the developers today. And the final release will be out in the Fall, for FREE.
