Tired of dragging your furniture all around your house ? Its the era of robots and there is a storm approaching. The latest video released by researchers of BioRob, Switzerland shows how a single piece of furniture can transform itself into a number of others according to the need of the instructor. These developers have come with modular robot orbs, called Roombots that could be joined or merged with furniture or other household things to make them mobile. The research still in the prototyping stage has been aimed at the physically disabled and could prove immensely useful for anyone in need of fuss free furniture either at home or at work.
One might need a chair and desk for work and during break he might want to enjoy his cuppa on a couch immediately after which there could be the need for a ladder to access the loft. All this could be possible with only one piece of furniture capable of converting itself into a ladder, a couch and then a desk and chair all with different functions.
Each 9 inch Roombot module looks like two large dice put together and houses three motors, a battery to power them and an antenna to control its movements. They also have small claws that help them grip onto existing furniture such as table tops and desks. Research though is in full stretch in areas such as controlling the robot either using gesture or speech recognition controls. Theses robots that would make use of existing pieces of furniture to make them mobile are said to be available commercially in the next twenty years or so.
