Massimo Vignelli, a famous designer of New York City reaches almighty at 83.This Italian born designer’s most incredible work was redesigning of New York City subway map.
He was hospitalized days before he died, and his son Lucas encouraged fans to write him letters of appreciation,as Vignelli always wanted to attend his own funeral.
Lucas said,
Massimo would be thrilled to get notes of good wishes from people whom he’s touched or influenced — whether personally or remotely — over the years.
Pentagram partner Michael Bierut, who began his career under Vignelli told,
Luca has visions of huge mail bags full of letters.I know that one of Massimo’s biggest fantasies has been to attend his own funeral. This will be the next big thing.Pass the word.
He spread clarity and coherence and practiced them with intense discipline in everything he turned out whether kitchenware, books or home interiors.
Mr.Vignelli’s work have been put up in Museum of Modern Art,Metropolitan Museum of Art,the Cooper-Hewitt national Design Museum in NY, as well as museums in Philadelphia, Montrel, Jerusalem, Munich and Hamburg, Germany.
Vignelli’s love for design started when he observed the most beautiful Interior designs in his mother’s friend house, he couldn’t believe that everything there was a human’s idea.He started reading all design books and magazines he could get his hands on, and sketching ideas for furniture he wanted in his room.
Design is a profession that takes care of everything around us, Vignelli told.
Politicians take care of the nation and fix things – at least they are supposed to.Architects take care of the beautiful buildings around us. But designers take care of everything around us.Everything around us, has been designed by somebody.
A minute silence for this great designer of the 20th century.
