At the Re/code Code Conference on Tuesday, Microsoft announced about its upcoming “real-time translation functionality” that’s coming to Skype.

The feature, dubbed Skype Translator, was demonstrated by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during an onstage interview at the conference in Palos Verdes, Calif.

During the demonstration, a conversation was conducted with a German-speaking colleague, on Skype providing real-time translation from German to English and vice versa. According to German speaking audience members at the conference, the translation software performed “pretty good” but not perfectly.

The demo showed near real-time audio translation from English to German and vice versa, combining Skype voice and IM technologies with Microsoft Translator, and neural network-based speech recognition. Skype Translator is a great example of why Microsoft invests in basic research.

Mr. Nadella says,

The feature, which is anticipated to debut as a consumer beta for Windows 8 later this year, currently supports translation for about 40 languages and will be available on all devices.

Currently, the Skype translator will only work with a modest number of languages, those that “it can do well” but Microsoft has plans to continually add additional languages to the app as development progresses.
