A mute button on twitter

Twitter users can now “mute” all those unwanted tweets from people they would like to hear less from. Being updated onto the iPhone and Android applications as well as the .com site the feature promises to restrict all those tweets you wish to not have on your timeline instead of blocking the account entirely. Twitter product manager, Paul Rosania says,

“You can now mute users you’d like to hear from less, the muted user will not know that you’ve muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time.”

Though push or text messages from those muted accounts will not be received, users will still be able to use the comment and retweet features on those tweets. Your timeline will also be void of any activity by the muted users on your tweets, such as fave, retweet, and replies.

Earlier this week CEO, Dick Costolo hinted at a “whisper button” that would allow groups of Twitter users to talk in private, only a one to many version of the direct messages service already in use. With all the muting and whispering going on, Twitter now might not be the usual noisy experience for many.
