Following the release of a phone that could 3D map the environment around it Google is all set to dub the technology to small 7-inch tablets. Named Project Tango, the devices that are to be incorporated with it use dual cameras and sensors to scan the world around them. The Wall Street Journal reported,
“The company plans to produce about 4,000 of the prototype tablets beginning next month, according to people briefed on the company’s plans. The device would come with a 7-inch screen and will be equipped with two back cameras, infrared depth sensors and advanced software that can capture precise three-dimensional images of objects.”
Earlier this year in February when Google released the official statement ion Project Tango rumor had that it would be more like devices instilled with features similar to Kinect. Such image and motion sensing features would be of more precision when pertained to devices with a screen bigger than average smartphones and Google has done exactly that in its latest move.
Reports say that these Project Tango devices are being aimed at the developer community to get to know the kinds of applications that can be developed. The Wall Street journal also reports that the initial 200 units of smartphones or Project devices may now be 4000 or even more. Though these might not prove to be of much use for regular smartphone users developers might find an interesting domain that is yet to be explored given the project is still in the prototyping stages. And for those who are still wage about what Tango is all about this video might just clear up the air.
