Smile! You have a Dimple.IO!

Missing the days when there were more physical buttons? Here’s one for you. A new project, Dimple has been announced that will add four more buttons to your very own android device without taking up the headphone jack. If the Pressy concept was something new this will take you by storm. The Dimple can be stuck anywhere on the rear side of your device and each button could be programmed to launch your favorite or most used app. It is a thin sticker that is 49x16x0.49mm large and requires no power in any form for it to function. The concept behind Dimple is simple yet interesting. It makes use of the NFC (Near Field Communication) technology that initiates a connection between the tag and the device within 4cm distance.

PROS

The tasks to a button can be assigned by the user with the Dimple app on Google playstore. They could be unlocking your phone, launching the camera app for an on the spot snap or even switching on your flashlight during emergencies. For the more creative at mind the buttons could be used to control music, launch the navigation app or even go straight to the settings of the device. Almost all android handsets running version 4.0 or more have the NFC feature in them supporting the probable usage of Dimple.

CONS

The HTC One users though are at a loss given their metal backcases which hinders the use of NFC. There is also a question on the durability of the buttons which the developers say can withstand up to 2 million clicks. It is a given fact though that frequent removal of the sticker can make the adhesive properties of the device to deteriorate which in turn is compromising with  the devices longevity.

The Dimple has not yet been released and the developers are launching a IndieGogo crowd funding campaign on the 6th of May. The device as of now has been price at a reasonable $29 and will definitely prove to be a hit among those looking for an alternative for all their touchpad woes.
