BMW i8 is a post-petroleum sci-fi showpiece

Well, Tesla, you have a competition. The BMW i8, is a definition of how the future of cars will be on the roads in Silicon Valley. The company’s post-petrolium $136,000 electric monster, is a screamer that eats up all other electric cars for breakfast.

It’s 2014, and we are still waiting at the gas station to feed our cars. But companies like Tesla pushed us to get into the electric car segment, proving it a point that they are far more efficient than the petrol cars. It was only after Tesla that lot of other big car manufacturers jumped right in into the consumer usable electric cars, rather than having them showcased at the Auto shows across the world as concepts.

Today, we have the BMW i8,  a plug-in hybrid from the automaker’s i sub-brand. This car, can easily seduce a man, the first time he sees it. The car combines a lightweight carbon-fiber body, with cuts that a heavily-worked-out muscular man would have. With 357-horsepower and all-wheel-drive, this coupe is super exciting.

The car’s moulds would take anyone’s attention easily. The multi-layered skin is blended aesthetically with the light-weight thermoplastic, that weighs 50% lesser than the steel. While these are just the physical aspects of the car, the hybrid technology that comes in for the driver is pretty impressive. With the eDrive button, the car is capable of running in electric to 75 m.p.h or until the battery screams and dies off.

So, what about the travel range? Well, its just 20 miles with the Electric mode, and the battery takes up about 1.5 hours to charge. But reports claim that with the Eco-Pro button, the battery life increases by 20%, since it just softens the motor response and put the climate control to good use.

The pick up of the cars are undoubtedly fast and the reviewers say that the car feels sturdy and very powerful to drive. The car can go from 0 to 60 in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 155 m.p.h. While these are the bright sides of the car, looks like getting in and getting out of the car and the way the car behaves on your is pretty harsh.

But, cars like these are the future, and we are expecting these cars to get a lot of customers in the years to come. Here’s the gallery for you to view.
