If you think there’s not much happening between the mobile devices and cars, you might have to start looking at the new Open Automotive Alliance now. Google, along with a lot of big car manufacturers have come together to form the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA).
OAA will essentially put successful mobile operating systems in the cars. The interesting part is that the chipmaker, Nvidia is also in the new group, which also has car manufacturers like Audi, Honda and Hyundai. While this news is exciting, the next question that comes into our mind is the release date of these cars equipped with mobile operating systems. Looks like we might have an answer now. The first car, with these mobile operating system in them, are expected to ship as early as this year.
The group think that this is going to add a lot of value to the car manufacturers and the end-users who will be using these cars. The group will also expand to some more manufacturers, who are expected to join the alliance, once there is some real-product shipping.
And as usual, the alliance promises to bring the best of Android into the automobiles in a safe and seamless way, for which some Android critics might laugh, considering its stability and memory management.
Apple’s iOS in the car system is already out, and the cars with these integrated systems are coming out to the market this year. This new group will show the real potential for these in-car systems. We recently tested out Ford’s Sync, which is covered up by Microsoft’s technologies, and it seemed to be so handy in a lot of situations.
We will have to wait and see what kind of integrations these systems will see in the cars. May be, Google will try to do something with all the lessons they learnt with their self-driving cars.
