Google acquires Nest for $3.2 billion. Products will live under Tony Fadell.

Nest Learning Thermostat and Protest Smoke Detector are one of the finest home appliances ever made. Nest, the company behind these products was acquired by Google for a whooping $3.2 billion. Tony Fadell, the original brain behind Apple’s iPod, revealed that the current products at Nest, will still live independently after the acquisition.

Co-founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers will move to Google to help the company. While Google has always been involved in the company via Google Ventures, where it has invested millions of dollars, this acquisition is more of a talent acquisition than a product acquisition. The complete transition is expected to happen in the next few months after the legal processes are complete.

Google did not reveal the purpose of this acquisition, but it sure does seem to have a future smart-home based product in its radar. Tony Fadell is also equally excited about the new acquisition. Here’s what he thinks about this move:

“Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone,”

Talking about the new acquisition, Google’s CEO, Larry Page writes:

Nest’s founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, have built a tremendous team that we are excited to welcome into the Google family. They’re already delivering amazing products you can buy right now–thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe. We are excited to bring great experiences to more homes in more countries and fulfill their dreams!

This move looks good. We might have to give this a year before we can actually think about the products that will be coming to us from Google, under Tony Fadell’s leadership.
