Jolla’s Sailfish OS to be available for Android phones

Jolla a Finnish based mobile designer and developer company, has announced that it’s OS, Sailfish, will be available for Android users. The option isn’t available yet, but the work has started. As stated by Jolla’s CEO Tomi Pienimäki,

That is the plan. We are on device business and OS business. It is fairly easy to install the OS on Android devices

Though installing custom OS may not be customary in many parts of the world, it is in China. Which is why the company is looking forward to  distribute the OS in this East Asian country. The OS will be available on websites which already provide a fair amount of open source technology.

The company has confirmed that it has no intention of making revenue by selling the OS, instead they will rely on applications, services and advertising. So giving the customers the option to switch onto the Sailfish OS while still holding an Android phone in your hand, without spending a penny, seems like a pretty awesome move. And as an added benefit, the OS allows users to install Android apps, both on a Jolla phone and any device running the OS. This seems like a pretty smart company to me!
