Facebook ‘might’ start tracking your cursor movements

A report by The Wall Street Journal reveals that Facebook is working on a software that could allow them to track user movements on the site. Right from your scrolls to hovers to right clicks to regular clicks, Facebook needs them to gather some data.

While some sites already does this kind of tracking, to get data about the users’ behavior on different pages, Facebook’s tracking mechanism might be different from them, according to WSJ. The company’s software is predicted to pay attention to the areas where a cursor keep lingering over, without any clicks.

This kind of tracking might give Facebook some data about a user hovering his cursor over someone’s picture, and also about their connection with them. So if you are even hovering your cursor on some of your friends’ picture whom you’re interested in, Facebook might have it in near future.

While this is the kind of tracking that will happen in the desktop version of Facebook, the company is also working on some interesting mobile users movement tracking, where Facebook will be able to get data about the amount of time the users spends on a particular section of the News Feed.

Some sites already do this for the betterment of users’ experience and also to get data about different user actions, and the way people interact with different sections of the website. But looking at the report from WSJ, Facebook’s might be a bit different from the others.
