Adafruit, an online electronics shop now accepts Bitcoins as a mode of payment. Though it is not the first company to jump the bandwagon, this is an important milestone for the digital open sourced currency.
For those of you unaware of this “cryptocurrency”, Bitcoin is an emerging form of decentralized currency. It is not burdened by the diplomacies of countries. It is available for everyone. At the time of writing, 1 Bitcoin is worth $801.32. Though it is rapidly fluctuating, the future may hold fruit for this digital currency.
The companies don’t stop there. Earlier this month, WordPress also accepted Bitcoins. Automattic Inc. states that, “Whatever the reason, we don’t think an individual blogger from Kenya, Haiti, Cuba, or Iraq should have diminished access to the blogosphere because of payment issues they can’t control. Our goal is to enable people, not block them.”
But the most notable accomplishment for this currency would be Virgin Galactic. Richard Branson, owner and spaceflight enthusiast, confirmed that they would be accepting Bitcoins for their commercial spaceflight tickets. Interestingly, a flight attendant in Hawaii paid for a ticket aboard a Virgin Galactic flight using Bitcoin, and became the first person to do so.
