Earlier this week, Valve announced the dedicated Operating System for living room games, the SteamOS. Today, the company is announcing Steam Machine, which will launch in closed beta only to selected people who signup for the program before October 25th.
The company has been taking the gaming experience seriously, and with the launch of this new hardware, which Valve is yet to preview or reveal any information about, its’ going to be interesting. Valve reveals that starting from 2014, there will be miltiple devices running SteamOS from different manufacturers.
Steam Machine will be optimized for SteamOS and Valve is producing 300 of them initially, which will be shipped to those who signup for the preview. Valve is also said to be working on a variety of prototypes and with different configuration and price points for testing.
Valve also promises that the entire architecture is open and completely upgradable:
While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.
This is the second announcement for the week. And the company has already reset the countdown timer on their announcement website. So we just have to wait until the countdown hits zero for the next announcement for the living rooms from Valve.
