A report by The New York Times reveals that Nokia had a special team setup which ported Android successfully on the Nokia Lumia devices, and had possibility of releasing a Lumia device with Android on it in the year 2014.
Nokia, which partnered with Microsoft to produce Windows Phone devices, was struggling to make an impact in the market ever since it launched its Lumia devices to the market. After realizing that they’re not doing well in the market, the company had Plan-B on track, which was to follow the herd and produce an Android device.
The report says that they had a dedicated team which was working on the Lumia devices running Android, and that the company was looking to end the partnership with Microsoft by 2014 and release a Android Lumia device after that. But if Nokia has ended a deal with Microsoft to produce Windows Phone devices, then it would have had a huge impact on Microsoft, since Nokia deals with over 80 percent of the Windows Phones which are available in the market right now.
If Nokia had produced an Android device with Lumia’s hardware, it would have made an impact, but right now, its too late to do that.
But now that Nokia sold itself to Microsoft, the chances of seeing an Android device from the company might not be a possibility. The deal is yet to be completed. And Microsoft would be paying $7.2b in cash to buy the patents and the devices division of Nokia.
