Microsoft has revealed a new logo for its search engine, Bing. The new logo aligns closely to the company’s other product logos like Windows, Office and Xbox.
The new logo comes with a simple, abstract and flat ‘B’ which uses a Segoe font to style the letters. This new logo was designed with a grid layout and a strong typography, which the company has been heavily using throughout its products, starting with Windows 8, which went completely flat.
Talking about this new logo change, Microsoft’s Senior Director of Branding, Scott Erickson says:
We were heavily influenced by Swiss design with its grid layouts and strong typography, which you’re seeing across the company,
While he reveals that the company believes in such a branding deeply, he takes sometime to explain about the letters which comes along with the new logo:
The descender on the ‘g’ was modified from the original Segoe font to curve upward ever so slightly which led to a more welcome and open feel. These details together with working with designers and engineers across Microsoft led to the collective brand architecture to create a new look that’s simple, streamlined and beautiful.
Microsoft has been trying to push Bing as much as possible. The company projected the search engine as a decision making engine, but it literally failed to get many users, using the service. The Bing team is trying to hard to compete with Google right now, and with the latest iOS 7, Apple has interestingly integrated Siri with Bing’s search results.
On the other hand, the company is going through through a lot of transition, with Nokia’s devices division coming in, and Steve Ballmer moving out, we could see some interesting stuff happening at Microsoft in the months to come.
