Jolla announces Android App and Hardware compatibility for Sailfish. Re-opens pre-orders in Finland.

Jolla, a company which was started by ex-Nokia employees, is now ready with Sailfish OS, which now offers compatibility with the Android apps and Android hardware.

Jolla started the first batch of pre-orders last month in Finland, and has been successful with that. The company has been seeing an increasing demand in the market ever since Microsoft acquired Nokia for about $72 billion. Talking about the second round of pre-orders, Jolla’s CEO, Tomi Pienimäki says:

There’s demand for us in Finland, particularly at this moment after the Nokia-Microsoft announcement. That’s why we are doing it now in Finland — because we have had so many requests from consumers that say, ‘Hey, now you have to do this’. So we are doing it,

The company’s Sailfish OS has been seeing a really good development. The OS now has achieved a milestone, where it is now capable of running on common Android hardware and also run Android apps.

The OS will be licensed by the carriers and OEMs across the world, but we are still not sure about the timeframe. The OS has been tested in a lot of different hardware in the past few weeks, and the company admits that they were able to run the OS without an issue on the regular and common Android hardware.

This might open up a whole new level of possibility for the device manufacturers. Apart from Sailfish running on the most common Android hardware, Jolla also confirms that the OS can now run Android apps which can be installed on the device. Interestingly, none of the Android apps would have to be modified to run on the new OS. This was made possible with the help of Alien Dalvik.

At this moment, we are aware that the second round of pre-sales orders have gone up in Finland. But we are still not sure about the pre-orders in the rest of the world. Jolla has to take cautious steps in implementing their product in other countries. Not all countries would give them the warmth that their own Finland offers.
