Writing and Executing Python on Chromebook (Chrome OS)

You might know from my Tweets by this time that I’ve literally been addicted to my Chromebook Pixel ever since I got it from Google I/O. The device is super simple, and gives me the power of browsing and simplicity when it comes to writing.

But then, I’ve been messing around with my Python knowledge off late to automate some stuff on my servers. But if I had to do, I need to pull out my MacBook Pro or reach out to my iMac to get things done.

When I thought this is Chromebook Pixel all about, I remembered the time in San Francisco, where the entire Google Developers Group India team was sitting around and hacking the Chromebook Pixel to run Ubuntu on it. (Yes we succeeded.). During that time, we were working on the Shell from the Developer Mode.

And when we have Shell access, executing Python should not be an issue. And there you have the answer. So in this how-to article, I’ll walk you through on how to put your Chromebook in developer mode.

Entering into the developer mode might vary from machine to machine. But I’m going to concentrate on the Chromebook Pixel for now.

  • Boot into the Chromebook Pixel normally
  • Now, press Esc + Refresh keys for a few seconds.
  • Now, once the screen goes off and switches on, it’ll display a page where it would be in the Recovery screen.
  • At this screen, press Ctrl + D

And that is it. It’ll boot into the developer mode once this is done. Now, once you are in the Developer Mode, just trigger Shell by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T.
