Apple has been denied the trademark for iPad Mini, for not being unique and descriptive by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The statement released by the office says that the name was merely descriptive.
The US Patent and Trademark Office has published a document, stating that they have denied trademark for iPad Mini to Apple. The USPTO has clearly stated the reason for rejecting the request by Apple. Here’s what it says:
The term “IPAD” is descriptive when applied to applicant’s goods because the prefix “I” denotes “internet.” According to the attached evidence, the letter “i” or “I” used as a prefix and would be understood by the purchasing public to refer to the Internet when used in relation to Internet-related products or services. Applicant’s goods are identified as “capable of providing access to the Internet”.
But this is not over yet. The rejection has happened late January 2013, and the company is reportedly trying to get the iPad Mini name trademarked. Apple has got until July to fight for the trademark. Interesting huh? I’m sure Apple’s team would not have expected this rejection.
