Saudi Arabia threatens to ban social services such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp. This move will take place if the services in question do not fail to comply with Arabic censorship terms.
Previously Blackberry Messaging service BBM faced a possible ban from the authorities. Afterwards RIM (Blackberry now) decided to heed to the governments demand though we are not sure to what extent Blackberry is complying with authorities.
Basically, the Saudi government demands control and access over the content shared between the services. UAE has already banned Skype and Viber applications but not to the extent of WhatsApp. The government has not yet given any explanation as to why they want to impose the ban.
Internet censorship can be hurtful, especially when it comes in the way of essential communication services such as WhatsApp.
