Mozilla hasn’t been in the news much for the past few weeks, but now, they have all reasons to smile and be proud of. Mozilla and Epic Games has successfully ported a ultra powerful JavaScript Engine onto the browser, allowing the game developers to develop games for the browsers.
In the mid 90s and Early 2000’s, I remember playing browser based Flash games, but then, it soon died out. And those games were exciting in its own period, but we’re now in an age where mobile phones are everywhere, and browser based games have become so unpopular. Looks like this has bothered Mozilla and Epic Games a lot. Both the company have worked off a way to run high performance gaming inside the web browser.
Mozilla announced this in their official blog stating that the users can currently try out some of the games which they’ve made, and interestingly, the company is showcasing BananaBreed, a game which they developed using WebGL and other cutting edge web technologies. The developers can start building apps with the new asm.js, a highly optimized version of JavaScript which Mozilla has developed.
The developed apps can now be submitted to the Mozilla Marketplace, and this has opened up possibilities of gaming in the upcoming Mozilla Phones. And users willing to try these apps right away can download it from the Mozilla Marketplace on Android. Here’s a video of Unreal Engine and Mozilla Firefox in action:
All these games and even more games would be demoed at this year’s Game Developers’ Conference, which is scheduled to happen in the coming days.
