According to a report by Bloomberg and a follow-up by The Verge (who confirmed with their own sources), Apple plans to release an iOS powered wrist watch by the end of the year.
It is believed that Apple has assigned a 100 man team on the iWatch project. Also Apple has filed for at least 79 watch-related patents so we can be fairly certain of the fact that Cupertino has an iWatch in the works.
The latest reports point towards a 2013 release. The iWatch is believed to have several biometric sensors along with the ability to make calls, check notifications, get mapping directions and many more features when paired with an iPhone. This fantasy device is also believed to draw in more profit as compared to the much rumoured Apple TV set. Citigroup analyst Oliver Chen believes that with the iWatch Apple could tap into a $6 billion market and churn a healthy profit.
Instead of improving the OS that powered the last generation watch-like iPod Nanos Apple chooses to modify it’s existing iOS platform to better suit the form factor of the iWatch. There are hurdles in the way but working with iOS ensures that Apple can provide a uniform UI across all their platforms. iOS also needs some modification to work with bluetooth enabled smart watches.
Battery life seems to be a problem that Apple is facing as the iWatch is believed to run out of juice within two days. Battery life is a crucial factor as a smartwatch is expected to run for about 4-5 days on a single watch. With nearly 9 months left till the supposed release date we can rest assured that Apple will do something to improve the meager battery life.
The iWatch, executed properly, could accelerate the growth of smartwatches all across the board. It will be a must buy for all geeks, especially Apple fanboys. Let’s just hope it’s priced right.
