Vimeo to go head-to-head with Vine. Acquires Echograph.

Vine created a huge buzz when it launched for its ease of use, and also for allowing age-restricted contents into their stream. And so did Cinemagram when it launched on the iOS App Store. But then, there was one more app which was making waves in the App Store, to create GIFs on the go. And that’s nothing but the Echograph. But today, Vimeo, the true competitor for YouTube, has now acquired the app to create a threat to Twitter’s Vine and Cinemagram.

The industry is in a stage where there’s competition by acquiring small developers and organizations, instead of doing something on their own. I think this is a healthy growth for both the bigger guys in the industry as well as the startup people. Today’s Echograph acquisition by Vimeo is one such example. Twitter acquired Vine last October, and they released the app recently to the public. The Vine app basically helps people shoot 6 seconds videos and share it with their friends over Twitter and also over the Vine app. They were like a short 6 second GIF files on a social network. But now, the app has got a new competition, which is yet to begin in the industry.

Vimeo, which is considered to be the only competitor to YouTube has announced this acquisition and revealed why they went in for acquiring Echograph rather than similar and popular apps like Cinemagram. Here’s what Kerry Trainor, CEO or Vimeo says about this choice:

“We chose Echograph because it helps people easily create beautiful high quality video content,”

“That, with Nick’s proven track record of building innovative video apps made it a perfect fit for Vimeo.”

The company has refused to reveal the deal amount, but this is probably the biggest move by the company to step into the mobile space, mainstream. The app could exits in the App Store, or it could simply turn out to be a Sparrow story.
