LG wants to use webOS for Smart TVs. Buys out webOS from HP

We thought it was dead. Completely dead. But now, LG has bought the source code of the much troubled platform from HP to port them to their Smart TVs. The new report from CNET says so.

There are no phones running webOS, and there are no tablets running webOS from HP in the market. But now, we might be seeing some cool webOS ported Smart TVs from LG, as the company has reportedly acquired the platform from HP. CNET reports that LG has agreed to buy the complete rights of the webOS platform from HP, including the source code, the team, its patents and everything related to webOS.

The new acquisition would bring some smile in the faces of the webOS team at HP, which was considered to be mismanaged by HP. It is also reported that LG does not have any intention of using the webOS for its smartphones, but only for their Smart TVs. Talking about the acquisition, Mr. Skott Ahn, President and Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics said:

“It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices,”

Once the official formalities are complete, the webOS team would move its base from the HP’s facilities to the LG’s Silicon Valley offices. And the deal is set to be completed soon, as LG might be looking at bringing the webOS enabled Smart TVs this year to the market.
