For us geeks 2013 is of to a tremendous start with the revelation of announcement of the Ubuntu phone OS. Software developer Canonical aims to release it’s first Ubuntu powered smartphone by 2014.
The mobile OS is built around the existing Android kernel and drivers but doesn’t run on a Java Virtual Machine which Canonical chief Mark Shuttleworth feels will enable the phone to use more of the phone’s processing power.
For the time being the OS is run on a Galaxy Nexus and Canonical promises that downloadable images of the development platform will be available in the coming weeks
The OS employs some very interesting ideas but we’re going to wait cautiously to see if it is a real player or yet another smartphone OS.
