Google+ VP of product Bradley Horowitz targeted Facebook and their advertisement model is a recent interview with Business Insider.
The Google executive repeatedly referred to Facebook as a “social network of the past” and boldly made remarks about their ads. Horowitz explained his point by painting a beautiful picture about sandwiches…
Me and my daughter are having a conversation and the least opportune thing you could do is have a guy holding a sandwich board sort of run between us and try to sell me a sandwich, right! I’m trying to connect with someone, I’m trying to communicate in that sacred space of social connection. Doesn’t matter if I ‘Like’ the sandwich, it doesn’t matter if it’s personalized with my favorite mustard, that is the wrong moment to try and dangle [it] in front of me.
There is a time and place for sandwiches, it’s called LUNCH, at a restaurant.
Horowitz believes that Facebook’s constant intrusion is frustrating users as well as brands. Google on the other hand offers recommendations for products you search based on your friends interests and thoughts. Not only is this approach non-intrusive but also tends to influence a users decision as far as the product is concerned.
The recent integration of Google+ with Play Store reviews was also mentioned as Horowitz explained how Google is bringing all of it’s services closer under the Google+ umbrella. as well as brands. Google on the other hand offers recommendations for products you search based on your friends interests and thoughts. Not only is this approach non-intrusive but also tends to influence a users decision as far as the product is concerned.
Unlike Google, Facebook is one thing and one thing only – a social network. Google+ has the advantage of being tightly integrated with some of the most widely used services such as Google Search, Gmail, GCal etc. and provides a deeper and wider experience of users.
Bradley Horowitz did not mention any new numbers apart from 100 million active users (users who log in at least once a month) but did mention that the number of users is “accelerating” and he’s quite content with the progress.
