Google releases its maps app on iOS

Ditched from iOS 6.0, Google Maps is back with a bang. Just hours after the launch the app has climbed to the top of the App Store.

In iOS 6 Apple decided to ditch Google Maps in favour of their own mapping solution, a decision which massively back fired. Apple maps simply weren’t ready. Trying to take on Google and its years of mapping experience was a Herculean feat, a feat which Apple struggled to come in terms with. No matter, Google Maps is back. This time as a stand-alone download from the App Store.

The app is completely native and employs the use of vector graphics to ensure faster load times and lesser data usage. All the basics are there – traffic, turn-by-turn navigation, transit directions, walking directions, satellite view, street view, indoor photos and Zagat restaurant reviews. Offline maps have been excluded from this release but we expect them in the near future.

At first look it easily appears to be the best mapping app not just on iOS but on other platforms as well. Expect an in-depth review of the same as we find our way around the app. Till then feel free to try it out.
