How to merge Phone Number with iMessage on Mac and iOS devices?

A quick tutorial on how to merge your phone number with iMessage on your Mac or iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch. This tutorial would help you do that quickly.

Apple introduced the iMessage recently, and the messaging system has spread its wings to the Macs too. Until recently, Apple users were not able to receive iMessages on their Macs, which were sent to their phone numbers. But with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, the integration was seamless. Users with an iPhone, running iOS 6 can now sync their iMessage with their Macs in a very easy way.

But there are some cases, where users were not able to sync their iMessage with their Mac machines. Especially, iMessages which were sent to their phone numbers. Say for example, I have iMessage, configured on my Mac and iOS device. But then, I get a new phone with a new phone number. Unfortunately, there’s no way the sync for iMessage on the new number to happen on the Mac. Here’s a way to do that.

How to merge your new phone number with iMessage on Mac or iOS device?

  1. On your iPhone, with the new phone number, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive
  2. Now, Check the format of your phone number which’s been registered there. My format is: +91 12-34-012345
  3. Now, on your Mac, open Messages app.
  4. Press Cmd + , (To open Messages Preference).
  5. Choose your iMessage Account from the left, and click on Add Email.
  6. Now, enter your phone number in the same format, which you identified in Step-2.
  7. In just a second, you’ll be asked for the iMessage password.
  8. And, that’s it. You’re done. Just try sending a test message to your phone number.

Note: This will not be an issue if you’re using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 already. It’ll prompt you asking if you’d like to add your phone number. But this might be useful in some cases.
