Richard Williamson, the man in charge of the team responsible for iOS Maps has been fired by Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue as the latter reshapes his team in an effort to provide users with a better service.
Apple had a long standing tie-up with Google Maps which was ultimately ditched in favour of an in-house mapping solution alongside the release of iOS 6. To put it mildly, Apple Maps have been pretty disappointing. Wonky terrain, incorrect labels, lack of transit options are just a few of the many reason why Apple Maps didn’t fare well and received a nice beating in the court of public opinion. The Maps debacle might not have hurt iPhone 5 sales but Apple isn’t resting on their laurels. CEO Tim Cook has come out and apologised for the same and has promised us a better mapping experience in the near future.
After Scott Forstall’s departure from Apple, Maps have fallen under Eddy Cue’s purview. The Senior Vice President has fired manager Richard Williamson for incompetency and Apple is fixing their navigation and landmark data with digital maps provider TomTom.
It is believed that Apple is focusing on glaring issues at the moment and is working round the clock to improve their broken service.
