Fix App Store Updates tab crashing on iOS 6.0.1 after OTA.

App Store’s Updates tab crashes when trying to check for app updates after upgrading to iOS 6.0.1 via OTA? Here’s a quick tutorial to fix this issue. This issue also occurs on some iOS 6 devices.

Apple released iOS 6.0.1 to the public with a lot of bug fixes, and the update was even available for iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad 4th Generation users. But then, for some users’ the App Store was crashing like anything for no reason after the upgrade. So I thought I should get into this problem to find some way out, and I think I’ve found where the problem has occurred.

The iTunes App Store app, on the iPhone is just a web wrapper that’s being rendered on the device, and with some small pull functions happening between your phone and the server. So, the chances of App Store crashing might be one of the following reasons:

  • Your device might be running low of RAM Space
  • Your network might have some trouble
  • Your account is not perfectly synced to the store after the upgrade
  • There’s a problem with Apple’s servers.

Now, let’s take  a look at how we could fix this issue. I was able to reproduce this issue on my iPhone 5 and here’s how I fixed it.

How to fix App Store Crashing after iOS 6.0.1 OTA update?

  1. After the update, let the crash happen.
  2. Now, reboot the device.
    1. Rebooting the device would clear off all the RAM data and refresh the processor, reducing the background services which were running earlier.
  3. Once the reboot is done, try to access the Updates tab. It should work as expected.

Method 2:

  1. Reboot your device after the crash
  2. Change to a different WiFi network
  3. Try accessing the updates tab.

Method 3:

  1. Reboot your device after the crash
  2. Switch between WiFi and Cellular data
  3. Access the internet with any other application. Like Twitter, or Safari.
  4. Now fire up the App Store and access the updates tab.

All the above mentioned methods seemed to have worked for some of my folks. We’re still not sure about what the exact problem is, but this is just a temporary solution that would be resolved by Apple remotely.
