Angry Brides is a game that takes direct aim at the Indian Dowry system!

There’s this new online game, the Angry Brides, that’s grabbing so many fans on Facebook for what it’s meant for. The game takes aim at the Indian Dowry system, which is illegal in India, with the most popular Angry Birds theme. The gameplay is that, the player attacks the grooms greedy for dowry with some interesting ‘weapons’ like broomstick, stiletto shoes and frying pans.

The game puts the player against the grooms, who begin the dowry with $29,500 USD, and then the player starts hitting with the favorite weapon. So, what happens when you hit the groom? Well, the dowry reduces as the player hits the groom.

This game has taken a very sensitive and serious issue from the Indian culture. The dowry system was banned and has been named illegal by the Indian government. But still, there are some families that mutually adopt this system in India. The game comes from the largest matrimonial website from India called shaadi.com.

We got in touch with Mr. Ram Dhamidi, Senior VP at Shaadi.com, about this game, and he said:

According to a 2007 study, there is a dowry-related death every four hours in India. We condemn this menace, and have consistently run campaigns via social media to help create awareness of the issue.

We think this is a great initiative by the website and you could get your hands-on with this game on Facebook. The user base has already hit around 282, 000 and is expected to grow as the days move on. Though this game is so much fun, there’s a serious note behind this gameplay.
