Winners of Yahoo! Open Hack 2012 India Announced!

And, the Winners of Yahoo! Open Hack 2012 India are here! Amod Kumar and Nikhil Baliga (featured in the picture above) bagged the grand prize and all the publicity they need to get their hack into a product in the future! Congrats Team!

The Winners: Amod Kumar & Nikhil Baliga for ‘Brock’

Amod Kumar Pandey and Nikhil Baliga finally took the winning momment when they won the Grand Prize. Their hack, Brock was the one which bagged the first Prize. Brock is a simple tool that allows even non-developers to build  small apps for their Android devices with just a few clicks. The concept of this app is similar to what Yahoo! Pipes is. Non-developers can build apps like Auto SMS responder for calls: automated action when an incoming phone call comes in. It can also help build useful apps like  WiFi controller, SMS scheduler, Auto-set phone to vibrations based on calendar meetings, location based app launcher and more. Brock is built on top of on{x}. Second Prize: [Team Nova] Rakesh Menon, Jamal Mohammed, Sumeet Chawla, & Lalit Chandnani for ‘PicTrendz’

PicTrendz won the second Prize in the event! Its an innovative collection of pictures fetched from various sources across Twitter! Pictrendz showcased trending photos from around the web in their winning hack. The service is also responsive and has been optimized for Desktop, Tablet, and Smartphones. Pictendz was Team Nova consisting of Rakesh Menon, Jamal Mohammed, Sumeet Chawla, and Lalit Chandnani. Third Prize: [Team BookWorms] Kousik Kumar, Jeba Singh Emmanuel, Priya Kuber & Neha Jain

BookMafia is a mobile app that enables easy sharing/exchanging of books among people nearby using the geo-location. From the team, “Simply scan the barcodes on books that you want to share and it will be added to your library. Users can also search for books in other users libraries and see a map of the location of the books they want. Once you find a book you want, the application allows you to send a text message to the owner to coordinate an exchange”. Give BookMafia a try!

Another Third Prize: [Team Arkene] Abhishek Shrivastava, Sumit Ranjan & Akash Chauhan for ‘Beam OS’

There were three third Prizes this year and Beam OS was the second one to grab it. It is an integration of complete Cloud storage services that are available on the internet into one single OS. The Beam OS hack helps users to manage, organize and browse all their files spread across multiple cloud services from a single user-friendly desktop-like environment. Beam OS was developed as a chrome plugin by Abhishek Shrivastava, Sumit Ranjan and Akash Chauhan. The hack made a good use of YQL. Give Beam OS a try!

And, Another Third Prize: [Team Shankey Inc.] Prajwal BS, Ramkumar S, Niraj Rajmohan & Rajesh Kumar S A for ‘Vibration Reduction for Improved Readability’

A group of 4 ex-Yahoo’s won the special prize for the category of “Multi-Device Experience”: the hack was Vibration Reduction for Improved Readability. The hack helps reduce the vibrations that are caused while traveling, by automatically adjusting the view of the screen (In this case Browser), using the sensors on the device. Shankey tried to solve the everyday problem of it being difficult to read text while traveling and they built this browser based hack to counter physical vibrations on Mobile devices to improve readability. They used HTML 5, WebgGL and the Accelerometer to build their hack in 24 hours. Hackers Choice Award: [Team Null Pointers] Dhruva Krishnan for ‘I am Bored!’

The hackers choice award went to I am Bored, an app that suggests you some movies to watch when you are single and bored. Null Pointers created this I am Bored mobile app using HTML 5 Geolocation, YQL and Dapper to show us what interesting things are happening around us. Give I am Bored a try!

We also saw some amazing sessions, and the company also announced that this is the biggest ever hackathon in India! Thanks to Yahoo! Team for inviting for this wonderful and fun-filled event, looking forward to Yahoo! Open Hack 2013!
