Microsoft demoes ‘Windows To Go’: You can now carry Windows 8 on USB drives, Officially!

Microsoft has demoed a very light weight version of Windows 8 that can run on a USB stick, which can be taken around, plug it into another system that runs Windows 7 and start working on the files.

Microsoft has been doing some exciting stuff at the Worldwide Partners Conference, and the company already announced the availability of Windows 8 and also, the news that they have acquired Perceptive Pixels at the conference. But then, while talking about Windows 8, Microsoft did a quick demo of a new distilled version of Windows 8 called, Windows-To-Go. The Windows-To-Go  lets the users to install Windows 8 on a USB drive, and carry the entire OS with them, along with the files. The USB drive can be plugged in into any of the PC running Windows 7 and the users will be able to access their files directly from the stick.

The OS, which comfortably sits on a 32GB USB drive carry all the settings and files on the drive. Once plugged in into another PC running Windows 7, the entire system turns on with the settings and customizations that the user has applied for the Windows To Go drive.

This new Windows To Go will make the files available in a traditional offline way to the customers. And also, remember the boot loads that comes with the pendrives, which says that it can have your files anywhere, anytime? Well, with Windows To Go, this is set to change. Just plug in, and there comes your very own personalized desktop on any system!

But what would Microsoft do about the data loses that may occur if you plug out the USB drive abruptly? Well, Microsoft reveals that they have had some security features involved into the OS, that would protect the files from getting corrupted. They are probably using the R/W mode pretty often on the USB drive? We’ll find out more about this soon!
