Apple removes ‘Web Sharing’ option from Mountain Lion! Disappoints Web Developers!

Looks like Apple has removed the Web Sharing option from the System Preferences in the latest public release of Mountain Lion.

We knew it wasn’t there, but we thought it was not available in the beta versions of the OS. But then, we found that the Web Sharing option, that would turn a Mac machine into a web server powerhouse, is no more available for the web developers. Our team has been using it extensively for the past few years, but this has disappointed our developers and also many others now!

Is it that Apple missed out? But Apple has never done it before. Apple is known for retaining back their existing features, and improvising them. Looks like Apple is not doing that as before. There’s no strong reason to remove this feature from the OS. May be Apple wants to open the doors for third party server engines that can run on Mac? We just need to wait and watch!

Is apache/php there by default or they removed them too?

    • ptlerner

ManikMalhotra No, they are there and anyone with two brain cells and some google fu can enable them. If you upgraded with Web Sharing enabled, it even stays enabled. It’s not like php was enabled by default in earlier versions anyway.

ptlerner I know, why’d somebody who can’t use shell to activate it ever use webserver, apple again proves to be sensible.

I guess that if you want it you need to pony up the extra $19.99 for the server version. No idea if this is true as I’m still on the client version, but it wouldn’t surprise me, and it wouldn’t be an unreasonable decision.

Wow, just wow. Do you get paid for this? theres probably about 50 articles that came out before this saying the same thing, but they all take 5 minutes to do some research and find ITS STILL THERE! You just have to activate it on the command line.I’m sure with this link bait you managed to get a couple more bucks worth of ad revenue but you can be sure I’ll never come back to this site again.

    • Hi Mike,Thanks for coming in. I really don’t find a reason for your anger. I still wonder why would someone read the 51st article on the same topic when he has already read the 50 previous articles. I very well know that it is there. We just covered this news to let people know that it’s been hidden and not user friendly like before. It can very well be enabled with a small tweak by using Apache that’s already present in it. Our primary aim has always been to bring the best news that our readers need. And I think we’re doing it well. And if you can see, we’re not targeting at ads. We just have one ad, that too at the bottom of a post. Nothing more. Please feel free to move around the site and let me know if there are some ads present. Thanks. Hope to see you soon.

If you can’t turn on apache via the terminal, you have no business writing a single line of code.
