Digg was acquired by Betaworks on 12th July 2012 in terms of brand and domain name. Soon after the acquisition, the company assured that the social news brand will be launched in few weeks with a new interface, written from the scratch and it has been finalized that the new version of Digg will be released on August 1.
Betaworks – News.me is the team are working on to revive the entire Digg experience, and they’ve officially confirmed in their blog that the backend of Digg will be developed from the scratch and it would be completely different from previous Digg. “I will quit if my profile, digs and other data are lost. It will be a good-bye to Digg”, users of old Digg yelling everywhere.
Why Digg needs a Remake?
As reported previously, Digg would be integrated into New.me, to provide even more featured services to its readers. Digg was once called the face of the internet and with the voting system, it was the main source for all the interesting happenings in the internet. But now, the social network fell down from the top after they went in for a not-so welcomed UI overhaul, which was released last August. It feels good to many techies all over the world that their old favorite social content site will survive. So whatever it is, it’s a Big Deal for the team to bring it back or get least attention. My wishes.
Rebranding Digg to regain the momentum it had previously is very important to retain the user base that the crowd sourced social network has. It could be a superb win-win situation for both the users and Betaworks for bringing Digg to the state it was previously in. One another major change is that, the social network will NOT be rebranded into News.me, instead, it would stay as Digg all along!
