Apple unveiled the Messages for Mac back in February, and here are some of the tips to make the most out of Messages for Mac and enrich your skills with the new iCloud enabled app.
Messages for Mac is a beautifully designed IM client with iMessage support in it. This next-generation messaging application from Apple, which comes to replace the existing iChat on your Mac has got some really cool features like that of the regular iOS 5 device and it syncs seamlessly across iOS 5 devices with iCloud. With Messages for Mac, you could exchange text messages (as well as files as of now) across all your iCloud and iMessage enabled devices with just a click of a button.
Here’s a quick list of tips that would place you at ease with Messages for Mac.
Enable Read Receipts:
Messages for Mac, as I said, works like that on your iOS devices. You can now let people know whether you have actually read their message with Read Receipts. To do this, Open Messages > Preferences > Accounts > [Your iMessage ID] and enable Send Read Receipts. This works only with iMessage and now, when you read an incoming message, a read receipt would be sent to the sender.
Edit Contacts:

Enable FaceTime instantly:
To each and every contact in your Messages app list, you would see a small icon at the Top Right corner of your window which indicates if the FaceTime call can be done with the contact or not. When you click on the icon, which is enabled only if the user has the FaceTime capability, you will be given options to select the account to which you can place a FaceTime Call.
Switch Between iMessage and Regular IM:
Messages actually allows you to receive at either the iMessage ID or your regular IM ID. You can choose between these two by just clicking on the recipients’ ID in the To: field and then choose the contact method for your further conversations.
Disable Smileys:
Do you hate Smileys? Then this one is for you. Just open up the View menu, Point to Messages and click on Hide Smileys option.
