ICANN reveals Apple’s plans to get .apple Top Level Domain!

ICANN has revealed in a publication today that Apple, along with many other companies are applying to get their own unique top-level domains. And Apple’s application states that they need .apple as their top-level domain.

It won’t be too long from now to see iphone.apple and ipad.apple domain names from here. Apple and many other companies have applied for their own top level domains, just like the .com and .org. Major tech companies like Google, Amazon and others have applied for such domain names.

The top-level domains are damn expensive, and they cost about $2500 per year to retain those domain names. Talk to Mr. Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of ICANN and he says:

This is a serious technical operation to run a top-level domain, completely different from a second-level domain. For the security of the internet, you have to do this right.

Now, what would happen next? Well, its with ICANN to approve or reject these huge list of applications that have come to them, looking at various factors. But it would be interesting to see such top-level domain names in the future.
