Is Google TV going to replace our laptops and personal computing devices
As we are now living in an era where technology evolves in an unprecedented pace and one technology displaces another like never before, it’s a logical question to raise a question mark on the future of our beloved laptops and other personal computing devices. Though some may argue that it will be too early to speculate anything as the concept of online TV is still in fledgling state. First of all we can try to understand the newcomer technology first.
Google TV aspires to be the next generation of television, with the joint collaboration of Sony, Logitech and Google. Google tried to amalgamate its Android operating system with the Linux version of Google Chrome web browser and create an interactive and smarter television platform, leveraging on the existing Web based TV and internet television. On October 6, 2010, Google TV was launched for the first time, in collaboration with its partners, mentioned earlier.
Google TV, how does it work
The key motivation behind Google TV was to provide a much flexible and limitless choice to the viewers to browse through their desired contents available online and watch it in real time. As we know that in our existing TV’s we have to flip from one channel to another, looking for the program that we want to watch at that moment. Sometimes we even go to the extent of adjusting our personal schedule according to the scheduled time of our favorite show on TV. Web based TVs such as Google TV can an answer for that. We will be able to watch our favorite TV shows any time, just by accessing the content, which is already there on the web.
Google TV vs laptops, a comparative study
Let’s bring back the previous question again. Are we heading towards an era where web based TV will become so versatile and rich in applications, that it will be potent enough to replace our personal computing devices. The reality is that it’s not going to happen anytime soon. Though it’s designed to seamlessly browse internet, stay connected with social media and with added hardware it can support a video-conference too. But in spite of all that when it comes to full circle web experience and ease of use, platforms like Google TV still lacks far behind our existing laptops and desktop computers. Despite these realities let’s not fail to recognize the potential that web based television technology holds for us.
My thought
At present the pace of growth of Google TV and similar other devices are restricted by the limited amount of web based contents and apps. But in the near future things can change rapidly and who knows, one day these web based TV gadgets can take the center stage in our living room. The race has already begun. We are to wait and watch.
