RIM has confirmed that they were behind the low-fi ad campaign, which held a literal protest in front of the Apple Store in Australia holding placards which read “Wake Up”.
There were a lot of speculation that Samsung, the major competitor for Apple was behind this low-fi protest promotion activity for their Android devices in front of the Apple Store in Australia. But looks like that’s not the case. RIM, the company which makes BlackBerry devices has confirmed that they were behind this ad campaign.
Confirming the report, RIM confirmed this news to MacWorld Australia recently:
We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.
The campaign created a huge negative impact among the public as well as the users. A die hard RIM fan spoke to us recently and he thinks that RIM has gone too low in conducting campaigns like these instead of proving themselves with their devices.
RIM is expected to announced their next version of BlackBerry OS on May 6th and the company has also hosted a website that reads, WAKE UP along with a countdown. This isn’t good for any company that wants to compete with its competitor.
Personal Thought: I had a high respect for RIM. But this campaign, certainly put me down. What’s surprising is that, none of the competitors have done such low-fi and cheap campaign. Yes, this campaign can be called cheap!
