Vonage Mobile for iPhone Offers Free Voice Calls and Texting. Can it replace Skype?

Vonage has launched a new mobile app for the iOS that allows you to make free calls to other Vonage Mobile users and free texting and offers the service 30% lesser than what Skype charges.

Looks like there’s a new kid in the block to rival Skype in VoIP segment. The Vonage Mobile app for iOS and Android promises to provide VoIP services at rates 30% lesser than what Skype is offering today. The new mobile app takes on Skype directly, which has been providing seameless VoIP services overtime.

The app also provides the users with free Voice calls and Text Messages to be exchanged with other Vonage Mobile users and seamelessly connects the iOS and Android users too. This App to App calling and texting is totally free and uses a high-definition audio codec to offer an improved audio quality.

You could purchase the premium service of Vonage Mobile through In-app purchase on iOS and In-app Billing on Android. Both the In-app Purchases comes in two variants, the $4.99 and $9.99. Your called ID is verified through your mobile number via SMS (The same method that Viber and WhatsApp Messenger offers).

Besides all these, the app is also offering free calls to phones in the US and Canada for a limited period of time. Remember that the service needs 3G connection for this app, since it requires 64KBps as its minimum speed to maintain the audio quality.

  • I don’t think they can replace Skype. They may improve or at least release new features to be at par with them, though.
