Apple has acquired the app search and discovery service, Chomp to enhance app search from just the keywords and titles.
Apple has confirmed to Wall Street Journal that they have acquired the iOS App Store App discovery service, Chomp, to make use of their proprietary search algorithm that goes deep into the app’s description to provide the search results. Although Apple does not generally discuss publicly about why they had purchased Chomp, it is clear that the iTunes App Store would get better search results now with this algorithm.
There’s an app that already exists in the app store for Chomp and is available for free that does the same job that Apple is about to perform in some months on the App Store. It is primarily a kind of social network that lets users to search and find apps that their Facebook or Twitter friends have reviewed apart from the regular search.
Currently, Apple offers search results only for the apps that are in the top apps list and it might be difficult for the user to get to the app that are not listed in the top listed apps. With Chomp’s acquisition, we can expect more accurate results on the App Store. And as you might have heard, iTunes App Store is about to get an interface lift in the months to come!
The Chomp for iPhone is still available on the App Store. If you need to try, just click here to get your copy!
