Android Market makes a transition to Google Play. Tries to unify content.

Google’s Android Market is now Google Play. Well, the Android users will now have Google Play as their default place for downloading and updating their apps on their device. The Android Market will no longer be available and Google Play will be “digital entertainment destination where you can find, enjoy and share your favorite music, movies, books and apps on the web and on your Android phone or tablet.

The news was officially announced by Jamie Rosenberg, Director of Digital Content, in blogpost earlier last week:

“Starting today, Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play,”

Google Play is not available for devices lower than Android 2.2. But for devices running Gingerbread and above, the roll-out has already in progress. While some Motorola users are complaining that many of the Android Market links are broken, and we are unaware on who is working to fix those up.

Google is definitely trying to unify all its content services to one single place. And Google Play is its start. We would not be surprised if Google brings Google Books into this new Google Play EcoSystem. Now, when you access market.android.com, it automatically redirects to play.google.com. Here’s a quick video tour of Google Play:
