Aereo wants to cut the chords off your TV sets. Debuts Cloud based service from Mar. 14th

Aereo is all set to launch a new TV Streaming Broadcast Service in the New York City Area trial on March 14th. The service would stream 20 local broadcast networks for its customers.

Aereo is a new TV Streaming service that is planning to launch an way to watch your favorite TV Channels without the cable. The new service will launch a city wide trial on March 14th in the NYC and would initially provide about 20 popular channels like FOX, ABC, CW, PBS, NBC, CBS and some more channels. The service comes at $12 per month, which is pretty much affordable for such a cloud streaming service in full HD.

The new cloud based Streaming service would stream up to 40 hours of programs at a time. Aereo aims at cutting the cord off the traditional cable system and bring in cloud based streaming services to the public. Chet Kanojia, the CEO and Founder of the company states that:

“If you have this and you have Netflix, you absolutely have the ability to not have a standard cable subscription.”

I think his statements stands true. Since almost all the major news and sports channels would be covered by Aereo and the entertainment channels are covered by Netflix. But still, the pilot program that begins on March 14th in NYC will give us more insight about the future of these cloud based streaming services.

On the other hand, talking about the technology that is going to be used to bring this streaming service to your home, Aereo has setup miniature antennas that are capable of pulling strong signals from the broadcasting stations and stream them directly to the users. This is more like the Dish TV system, where the user would get this miniature antenna to be placed near his house to grab the broadcast signals. So ultimately, the subscriber would need to have a HTML5 compatible browser like Safari, Chrome or Firefox to view the streams and the service is not restricted to desktop computers alone. They can be used to watch then over the iPhone or your Android devices.

All such low-cost streaming services are going to be the future of television broadcasting industry and in the not so distant future, these cloud based streaming services are going to cut the cords off the regular TV systems.
