How to manage iCloud backup for apps without wasting storage space!

This tutorial will help you manage your iCloud backup and storage for apps on your device. You will know how to exclude some apps from backing up to iCloud.

iCloud was unveiled by Late CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs at WWDC 2011. The new service is available for free until you consume 5GB of online storage that includes email, messages, backup, calendar, notes and much more. After the free 5GB of space, you will need to pay for the extra storage of upto 50GB.

iCloud backup is available for iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. iCloud allows you to backup applications, homescreen settings, user settings under settings.app and much more. But, what if you want to exclude some apps from syncing with iCloud? Here’s how you could do so.

  1. Go to settings.app from your homescreen:
  2. Select iCloud sub-menu from Settings.app
  3. Now, you will see the data that are syncing with iCloud by default. Now tap, Storage & Backup
  4. iCloud will now show you the data usage of iCloud. Now Select, Manage Storage
  5. The menu will show the Backup history for your account and devices.
  6. Select your Backup Device. [Karthik K’s iPhone in my case]
  7. Now, switch off or switch on individual apps that could sync with your iCloud account:
You are all done now. Enjoy backing up with iCloud. You can also follow the iCloud tag to know more about iCloud and tutorials on using iCloud.

Do you need to back up your apps? Aren’t they saved under purchases on iTunes. Also, like the kindle app, isn’t it backed up by Amazon’s servers to save your books? I’m just wondering if there is a reason to back up any apps to iCloud because that is what is taking up most of the space on mine.
