MeeGo dies and Tizen is born today as Android’s rival

MeeGo was born not so long ago and it is sad to see its death too early. Today, Tizen, which is entirely Linux based OS for mobile has born to rival Android.

It was not so long ago that MeeGo was launched for the mobile devices, and got open-sourced. The mobile giant, Nokia thought this could be a rival for Android and would take the company to the next level. But unfortunately, it did not work out for the company and now, Intel has come up with another project called the Tizen.

The project has come up with the Linux Foundation which is hosting the project and will join hands with Intel and Samsung. The most surprising part about the Tizen is that it would support a range of device categories, like phones, smartphones, TVs and netbooks. Now that Nokia is concentrating on Microsoft Windows Phone ecosystem, the company has stopped developing MeeGo.

If you are not aware of what Tizen is, here’s what the official website says:
The Tizen application programming interfaces are based on HTML5 and other web standards, and we anticipate that the vast majority of Tizen application development will be based on these emerging standards. These APIs will cover various platform capabilities, such as messaging, multimedia, camera, network, and social media. For those who use native code in their applications, the Tizen SDK will include a native development kit. We will open the entire Tizen software stack, from the core OS up through the core applications and polished user interfaces.
The Samsung, Intel and Linux Foundation combination is huge, and will definitely grab some attention from the customers. We can soon expect some beautiful gadgets powered by Tizen in near future.  And Samsung should definitely think out of the box to make some UI improvements so that the OS clicks with the end-users. BTW, RIP MeeGo!

hiiihih why do u said so!

For your info, MeeGo is open sourced and it never dies. You can now say only that Intel dropped it, like Nokia did. There is a large community working at the back under the Head of Jukka Eklund on MeeGo.

Also for the general info, ” Tizen combines the best of LiMo & MeeGo to create an open source cross device platform with support from Intel AppUp developer program, and a development framework based on HTML5 & WAC standards.”

Whereas, MeeGo lives, as long as MeeGo devs live. And MeeGo need not die just becos TIZEN is born, bcos MeeGo’s apps could run on TIZEN so MeeGo doesn’t die.

And Samsung doesn’t come inside TIZEN yet.
Proof : “For those speculating on rumors per Intel & Samsung, I trust this news is more encouraging than what was bounced around in the blogosphere. This is not a two company story. With the Tizen platform, the Linux Foundation and LiMo unite, driving more choice and open innovation.” – excerpt from http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/blog/2011/09/27/new-tizen-platform-linux-foundation-limo-intel-appup

And also to say about MeeGo, “And yes, MeeGo continues for our devices in market. MeeGo is a great choice for emerging markets and we’ve seen amazing devices already like the ASUS EeePC x101. AppUp continues to support MeeGo and we encourage MeeGo developers to continue to build and submit apps for our netbook devices in market. We also encourage MeeGo developers to consider a common development framework of HTML5 to bridge development between MeeGo and Tizen devices. And on the netbook side the MeeGo neetbook apps in the Intel AppUp center will be compatible and will run unchanged with Tizen netbook. So for those developers who invested in MeeGo for netbooks your apps will continue on Tizen netbooks.”

Do more homework before writing about anything. Rumours can be spread only till the real and true news comes out. Not after that.

@Manoj: Thanks for the clarification! But we are closely associated with Samsung and we know the working! MeeGo does live until devs live, but still, We wonder on which devices it will be deployed onto! 🙁

  • Karthik.K’s Geek Center

And FYI!, we love MeeGo too! 🙂

Samsung wants a change from android and I know they were trying to take up webOS once. Now they are also in talks with korean firms and govt to create a OS of their own. LiMo is one such firm, so samsung *will* ship the devices even if intel fails to.

Cool! Let’s see what happens! 🙂
