How to reset lost Mac OS X Lion password?

Many users have been wanting to reset their password of Mac OS X Lion (10.7). There are two methods to recover the password. Here’s how to recover it.
Mac OS X Loin is considerably secure than the previous versions of OS X. Until Snow Leopard, the password reset tool was easily accessible from the Utilities menu, but it’s not the way anymore. The password reset method has been made complicated to make it secure.

We would be covering two methods to recover Lion’s password. One, is a common method using a Terminal.app and the other method is using the GUI to reset Mac’ password.

Recover Lion’s Password using the GUI:

The GUI method is somewhat complicated when compared to the terminal.app method. But still, its worth giving it a try.

  1.  Boot into the Lion’s Recover drive.
    1. Hold the Option Key while booting your Mac.
    2. Select the Recovery disk as the boot choice.
    3. Now, select the Terminal under Utilities menu option in the Mac OS X Utilities menu.
  2. In Terminal, type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    1. This would delete the AppleSetupDone file from your Machine. This file is responsible for setting up your Lion’s Password initially.
    2. Deleting this file would bring you the initial Lion setup screen, follow the onscreen instructions as you did while setting it up for the first time.
  3. Not everything is set now. Open your System Preferences
  4. Click on Users & Groups
  5. Authenticate your right. (Just click on the Lock icon on the lower right corner of the System Preferences app)
  6. Select the user account from the User List, and click on Reset Password.
  7. Enter your new password and you’re done!
All you need to do now is to reboot your Mac and you’re good to go!

Reset Password using Terminal.app:

This method is one of the easiest method to reset your Mac OS X 10.7’s password. But the complication comes where you need to either have a Lion Recovery disk or a untouched Lion Recovery Partition.

  1.  Boot into the Lion’s Recover drive.
    1. Hold the Option Key while booting your Mac.
    2. Select the Recovery disk as the boot choice.
    3. Now, select the Terminal under Utilities menu option in the Mac OS X Utilities menu.
  2. In Terminal, type resetpassword
  3. Type the password after confirming the user account
  4. Reboot your Mac. And you’re done!
