Open camera app from iOS lockscreen [iOS 5 hidden feature]

Its more than 20 Hours that I have been working on iOS 5 and looks like there are a lot of undeclared features to be discovered in iOS 5. One signicant feature that I found was that you can open your camera.app from your lockscreen. All you need to do is to just double tap your Home button. The “Slide to unlock” box will shorten its width and will show a camera icon on the right side. The screenshot below shows this feature.

After you click the camera icon, it will open the camera app, and you can take pictures with your Volume buttons. Pressing the Volume Up button will click a pic for you.

That’s really interesting. Steve found that “secret” as well and presented it at the WWDC keynote so I don’t know why you called it hidden feature :/ fail

    • Well,
Many did not know this. That's the reason it was titled this way! 🙂

Only people who didn't watch the keynote or look at the website wouldn't know this… but then again, they would give a damn enough to look at this ONE article, other than the official website at which it is shown… Thank you captain Obvious

  • Thank you CaptainAwesome!
    Did you try it out?

Thank you very much! I was struggling to figure it out how to do this and without you’re post I wouldn’t have made it. Thanks again! Don’t mind all assholes.

I can not express enough how stupid this is. You need to double click to make the camera icon appear?? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having quick access to the camera app? I was made to believe that it would just be there on the lock screen. If i have to take time to double click then press the camera icon, wait for it to load before i take a pic, i might as well swipe to unlock and fire up the camera app the old fashion way. This is not a good move, Apple.

Totally agree. I don’t see the difference with doing it the ol’ way

This “hidden” feature is really hidden. I thought hitting the volume up would take a photo. I skimed the keynote and knew about this feature, but not how to do it. I agree it is lame that a double click is necessary.

Do you need to activate it somehow? I’m on iOS 5.0 and I dont have Imessege either !
