Minority Report UI arrives via KinectNUI

We’ve been blogging about the power of Kinect and its related hacks previously. And now, we’re back with another interesting hack, that enables the unforgettable and so far not achieved technological movie, Minority Report. KinectNUI is a project (hack) made by Kevin Connolly, which brings us close to Minority Report’s smooth gestures.

With the release of Microsoft’s Kinect SDK, many developers have been working on it to bring out their potential in making jaw dropping projects. And one among these is the KinectNUI project. KinectNUI is the Kinect Natural User Interface, that aims at bringing the Minority Report kind of UI to Windows based PC. Here’s a clip from Minority Report which demos the UI being used by Tom with gestures.

The gestures are not so fast and has a limitation that we should stay in a particular position to make the movements. But this is a project in-progress and so these tend to happen. The video demos the Aero effects, moving across the screen and moving windows across the screens.

Kevin is also planning to implement a Pie menu in this project. The pie menu will bring up all related information about an object from the database around an image. The project is really interesting and we got our hands-on with it.

The project has been opensourced and the code is available for development at codeplex.

We will soon comeup with a tutorial on how to make this work on your Windows 7 machine. Until then, don’t forget to subscribe to our RSS or follow on twitter (@ImKarthikK)
